Differences Between Novel & Anime - "No Game No Life"

As an art, adaptation is a lot like translation—you can’t expect an adaptation to be exactly the same as its source material. Novels can be great at showing introspection and getting into the characters’ heads, while animation has to rely on visual shortcuts in order to get the same point across. Just because an adaptation omits something from the novel doesn’t mean it’s worse off for it. I find it incredibly fascinating to examine the choices anime directors make in order to bring a story to life through a visual medium.

With that preamble out of the way, let’s kick off the first issue by looking at a popular light-novel-turned-anime from 2014: No Game No Life! (This article contains light spoilers for the first four episodes, so be warned.)

But, that's not all. An early look an announcement has revealed plans to bring the story to a new TV anime.

Then, Baki ("New Grappler Baki: In Search of Our Strongest Hero") ran 31 volumes starting in 1999, followed by Baki Hanma ("Baki: Son of Ogre"), which ran 37 volumes starting in 2005, and now,  Baki-Dou (Baki: The Way), which started in March, 2014.

See How Much Money "PPAP" Has Made From the Song

"Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen" has been an internet sensation, garnering over 90 million views on YouTube. "PPAP" has even charted om Billboard's Top 100, hitting #1 in Japan and #77 in the U.S. With all this popularity, the big question is, "How much money has Piko Taro racked in?"

The answer Piko Taro gave to that question was: "I haven't received a single yen from the song." This is incredibly strange, because the track is available as a paid download on iTunes, is commercialized on YouTube. Someone must be making a ton of cash off the viral sensation, and if Piko Taro is telling the truth, then someone needs to give him his due.

New Images Released for "Lupin III" Film

The Blood Spray of Ishikawa Goemon will premiere in Japanese theaters on February 4, 2017.

Images released today show a decidedly younger Lupin and Goemon, as well as a new, brutish villain known as The Bermuda Spectre. By all accounts, the film is pitching itself as a prequel to the long-running franchise. While we have seen and heard various accounts of the first meeting between the two characters (a notable one being in the 30th anniversary special Episode 0: First Contact), this could well put them all to shame.

If we go back to some of the earliest accounts in the manga, Goemon hangs out with Lupin and the gang because he wants Lupin dead -- in particular, Goemon wants to be the one to kill him. Whether this will hold true in the upcoming film is anyone's guess, but seeing as the recent run of Lupin media has gone back to some much older concepts (such as Goemon and Fujiko being an item), it just might.

"Kimi no Na Wa" Setting Earns 18.5 Billion Yen From Anime Pilgrimage

The setting of Makoto Shinkai's smash-hit film your name. (Kimi no Na wa.) is profiting from the anime's success. A Japanese television program recently reported that tourists have brought in 18.5 billion yen (about US$164 million) to the local economy around Hida, the northernmost city in Gifu Prefecture.

About 750,000 fans have already flocked to the area as one of the latest anime pilgrimage sites. Places such as Hida-Furukawa train station, the Hien Shrine, abandoned bus stops, and the local library appear in the film. Hida Library is playing a special part in the area's recent economic boost by selling "holy land" sake for 3,240 yen (about US$29) each. All 3,000 bottles of the sake have sold out, and more are being manufactured.

"Drifters" The Counterfactual Characters Part 1

A real guide to the fictional history of the Drifters, their real life counterparts, and where they overlap! [By Peter Fobian from crunchyroll]

Welcome to part 1 of our guide to the characters of Drifters and their historical counterparts, where I'll be perusing their backstories with an amount of detail that will doubtlessly frustrate honest historians to see if Hirano's portrayals hold true. We'll also focus specifically on the events surrounding each of their "supposed" deaths for opportunities Murasaki may have used to spirit them away. First up will be the Drifters, then part 2 will focus on the Ends.

Shimazu Toyohisa (1570-1600) Aged 30
A warrior of the Shimazu clan who fought in the historic battle of Sekigahara. The outcome of this battle is widely considered to be the victory which led to the consolidation of the Tokugawa shogunate. Unfortunately, the Shimazu were fighting under Toyotomi Hideyori against Tokugawa. Shimazu led a short and violent life as a soldier, giving us very little insight into the accuracy of Hirano’s portrayal. Olminu’s observation about Shimazu’s disturbing obsession with head collecting is pretty spot on and would have been considered extreme during that period. Shimazu is the only character in Drifters lacking historical prominence sufficient to score some sort of lasting artistic recreation, which might help explain his need to collect accolades as well as the unsatisfying lack of an interesting wood-cut or statue above.

It’s widely accepted that Shimazu was killed in the battle of Sekigahara, fending off a pursuing force and facilitating the retreat of his uncle, Shimazu Yoshihiro. Reports of his death are inconclusive, however, some stating he died in the field and others later on from his wounds. Can’t really blame them for making an assumption if it played out like Hirano depicted. The tomb of Toyohisa was constructed on the Odu Slope, where he is believed to have perished.

This year's 52nd issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine is revealing on Monday that Haruichi Furudate's Haikyu!! volleyball manga will get a new stage play adaptation in spring next year. The new play, titled Hyper-Projection Gekijō Haikyu!! "Shōsha to Haisha" (Hyper-Projection Stage Play Haikyu!! "Winners and Losers"), will first run in Tokyo on March 24-26, before running in Miyagi from March 31-April 2, in Osaka from April 13-16, in Fukuoka from April 21-23, and then back to Tokyo again from April 28-May 7.

The cast from the previous stage play will all reprise their roles.

The story will feature the match between Karasuno and Aobajōsai. Like the last two stage plays, this new play is billed as a "hyper-projection play," with video projections that allow for manga-styled speech bubbles, as well as views of the stage floor, and a revolving stage.

Hirunehime Trailer Introduces Theme Song "Daydream Believer"

The official website for the upcoming anime feature film Hirunehime -Shiranai Watashi no Monogatari- (Princess Nap -The Story of Unknown Me-) today posted a 100-second full trailer featuring its theme song "Daydream Believer" sung by 24-year-old actress Mistuki Takahata (More About Her) who voices the protagonist girl Kokone Morikawa. As a singer, Takahata has released four singles and two original albums.

"Daydream Believer" was originally released as American pop idol group The Monkees' 6th single in October 1967. But in Japan, it is more known by its Japanese cover version performed by four-member masked rock band The Timers led by the late Kiyoshiro Imawano (RC Succession) in October 1989. Takahata sings the Japanese lyric version.
